Pavan Davuluri, the new Windows chief leading Microsoft's big AI-powered comeback

In a major reorganisation move, Microsoft has reunited its Windows engineering teams under Pavan Davuluri, the newly promoted President of Windows and Devices. Davuluri is now in-charge of driving Microsoft's AI-powered vision for Windows.

Pavan Davuluri is the President of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, a position he was promoted to in March 2024. A 23 plus year veteran of the company, he now oversees both the Windows operating system and the Surface hardware division.

Pavan Kumar Davuluri is an IIT Madras graduate. He completed his post-graduation from the University of Maryland.

Key facts about Davuluri and his role:

His promotion came after the departure of former Windows and Surface chief Panos Panay, who left Microsoft for Amazon in September 2023.

As of September 2025, Davuluri is leading a major restructuring to unite the company's various Windows engineering teams. The move consolidates Windows client and server engineering under a single organization to focus on building an AI-powered "agentic OS".

A central part of his strategy is developing an "AI-driven" Windows that can perform tasks autonomously for users. The move to bring teams back together is intended to streamline development for this new AI focus.

During his more than two decades at Microsoft, Davuluri has held multiple leadership positions. He has worked on products across PC and Xbox hardware, Surface, and Windows.

Prior to his promotion, Davuluri was the corporate vice president for Windows and Silicon & Systems Integration. In this role, he was instrumental in developing custom processors with partners like Qualcomm and AMD for Surface devices.

The reunification of the hardware and software teams under Davuluri is designed to take a holistic approach to building the next generation of Windows for the AI era.
